Most of today's arrow & message boards use computer controlled programming connected to photovoltaic electric systems with solar battery storage. Relays and gas generators for power have been replaced.
These portable arrow & message boards are used at sites where they are subjected to severe shock & vibration. The older flooded batteries had major problems of failure due to battery plate breakage or other physical damage. In reality, flooded batteries are not regularly maintained or watered. The robust Sun Xtender solar batteries are constructed like Concorde's military aircraft batteries. These aircraft batteries are required to perform under severe conditions where shock & vibration are commonplace (think jet take offs and landings). Also, the Sun Xtender Series of solar batteries are sealed batteries, requiring no watering, unlike the flooded types. In reality, flooded batteries are not regularly maintained or watered.
Sun Xtender AGM batteries are so reliable they are specified for deep cycle applications by Caltrans, the State of California's Department of Transportation.
